Description
I did study textile art in Belgium but I live in Turkey since 1993.And I am making miniature carpets for more than 7 years (8?-9?), it started all with a bit of good luck: I started making carpets in small sizes.  The first one I sold was to a Dutch tourist for his dollhouse.  Some years later I was making a try out of a new technique and an American carpet dealer watching me knotting the carpet said: 'OH you make a miniature Turkmen rug'.  After this my interest was born and I made a search on Internet for 'miniatures': I did discover a complete new world! When I grew up in Belgium we did not know miniatures - well I did not  -but maybe it was because I grew up with 3 brothers -I had 3 sisters too but they where much younger than me ... I never did play with dolls as a child!  So when I discovered this mniature world I made also a search for 'miniature carpets' and I could only find some very nice cross stitched rugs and a lot of- not so nice- machine woven carpets. I see them here in Turkey in every souvenir shop.  I decided to try some miniature carpets and it was very fun to make them.  I am not a patient person..most people do not believe this..but it was very hard for me to work on the real size carpets I made before - weeks and weeks of the same color and design - it is so boring!  So when I started to knot miniature carpets I was very happy: I could finish a carpet in 'just' some weeks! And for the smaller ones in 4 or 5 days.  I had to learn to use different material and make special miniature designs... so that did take several years of experience.  I love most the dark classic and nomad carpets but dollhouse people seem to think lighter colors look better in a dollhouse... I am very happy I can tell you I got selected for IGMA artisan Sunday 18 May 2008. I want to thank all my customers who believed in me, thank you all for the support and the very nice feedbacks!     This wool carpet is made on a carpet loom in the same technique as real hand knotted Oriental carpets and has around 240 knots /square inch. This carpet is  8''3/8 (21,1 cm) wide and  1'1/4'' long  (31cm)with fringe. It is  flat and very thin, perfect for 1'' scale. It takes several weeks to knot a bigger fine piece like this and it is much nicer than the picture shows.  I call this one my 'Christmas' carpet because of the colors...but now that I look at it I also think gnomes?  Maybe because I have been looking at to much gnomes pictures lately? and they are related to Christmas anyway! I just remarked there is a green thread on the picture...sorry for that...must have been the gnomes!   me and my loom: a picture explains maybe better how my carpets are made....
