The need for a sensitive interpretation in bronze influenced the choice of Karl-Ulrich Nuss for Steiff's Teddy Bear Monument. The artist's goal was to transmit the softness of the plush animal, despite the hardness of bronze as the medium.  Steiff also wanted to include an additional part of its history, and so the little elephant of 1880, the first of the Steiff toy animals, crowns the monument.The bronze Teddy Bear monument was erected in front of the Margarete Steiff toy factory gates in Giengen,Germany. Individual bronze miniatures were produced in memory of the Teddy Bear Monument's unveiling on June 18,1993.
