Especially widely know was the output of the bone-carves of Kholmogory (now Lomonosovo) Archangelsk region: their vases, caskets, tobacco-boxes and wine -cups were in heavy demand throughout the eighteen century, when the art was at its peak. It was then that the basic Kholmogory carving technique came into being-a combination of a an openwork background with scenes is relief, color engraving and inlays. Eighteenth century items of carved bone had a strongly pronounced decorative aspect; today they are on display at the Armory, Moscow, the Hermitage, Saint Petersburg and other museums.
