No doubt Mattel will engender much hoopla for one of its most prized possessions, the golden girl who launched a gazillion outfits, accessories, pets, homes, luxury cars and everything else the ultimate teen queen required to keep up her unique appearances. If you were going to obtain one piece of Barbie doll memorabilia in honor of the 50th anniversary, especially for anyone already lucky enough to own a No. 1 PT, here is one of the rarest pieces of Barbie memorabilia ever made: a 1960 golden statuette of the Barbie doll wearing her most famous and elegant ensemble, Gay Parisienne. She is absolutely fabulous, highly detailed down to the specks of her dotted bubble skirt and the patterned hint of long gloved on her arms. She is weighty and is made to look like bronze, but is probably a heavy, gilded ceramic. Ruth Handler believed this was an ultra-scarce creation made during a brief period by a Japanese company Mattel licensed to make statues of the Barbie doll wearing her earliest finery. The limited statues may only have been sold in the Japanese market; that's how scarce they are. (It would also explain why the outfits have slight differences from the actual clothing produced for the American market.) Single statues have also been seen of this Barbie statue wearing Solo in the Spotlight; the original B&W striped maillot swimsuit; and two other ensembles I heard about but am forgetting.  The golden Solo sold at auction for $4400. Barbie Gay Parisienne is even more desirable, and the buyer would  be one of very few people in the world to own such a remarkable keepsake rarity of the greatest doll ever made.
