Skittles is an old traditional game, which may have its roots as long ago as 3rd or 4th century Germany. Around the turn of the 20th century, many versions of skittles became so popular in Europe, especially England, that both amateur and professional skittles associations were formed to celebrate the game. Its greatest popularity, however, seems to have been as a game of fun to be enjoyed among friends in pubs.Several factors led to the eventual decline its popularity, including World War I and gambling. Laws against gambling on skittles were eventually passed in several countries, effectively banning the game until clever players realized that they could avoid the law against betting on nine-pin games by adding a tenth pin, and 10-pin bowling was born.Skittles was played with nine pins in a diamond configuration. Some versions used a slightly larger or special pin in the center called the king pin. Appropriately enough, our king pin is a Steiff teddy wearing a red felt tailcoat and crown.This set is a replica of the 1897 original. The set includes nine felt and excelsior filled animals, balanced on wooden risers and two soft balls. Each skittle comes with a black and white consecutively numbered ear tag and gold plated "Button in Ear."
