I was so pleased to find an original Harper's Young People illustrated weekly magazine from 1880 with an illustration and poem of a Jack-O'-Latern on the cover. This is the oldest reference to a Jack-o'-Lantern in my collection.To make this miniature version look more to scale I chose only eight of the original's pages to keep the magazine from looking too thick. It is to scale in height and width with the original measuring less than 3/4" x just under 1" in height. The illustration from the etching on the cover shows a young boy holding a Jack-o'-Latern on a stick with an insert of him carving it in the upper corner and the pumpkin growing in the feild in the lower diamond shape insert. The poem ends with "And though his is a empty head,He can with satisfactionAmuse a crowd and make himselfThe centre of attraction.Hurrah for Jack-o'-Lantern!"The other pages I chose for this miniature version include an article on Stamp Collecting, an illustration showing how Buckwheat Cakes are made from the growing, harvesting to serving pancakes at the table,two pages of lovely illustrations and short poems and two pages of letter's to the editor with an illustration of two girls and their dolls and a hunter's nightmare of being caught by bunnies in a trap on the back cover.
