As a tribute, Steiff launched a brand new design in 1953, an example of which was sold at the 2002 Steiff Festival for approx £45000. These black Teddy bears were made in a wide range of sizes in a very small series in 1953 and the example sold in 2002 was the only 35 cm one known to have survived. In 2004 this rarity from the period after the Second World war was brought back to life as a replica. Each one is made from finest mohair and stuffed with wood shavings. His nose and claws are hand stitched and his glass eyes shine with pleasure. He has a gold plated "Button in Ear" with an embossed elephant as well as a white, consecutively numbered ear tag and a certificate of authenticity. Purchased as an investment and now reluctantly offered for sale at a realistic price, this bear has been carefully stored in its box in a smoke and pet free environment.
