I have lots of bears, dolls, and related ephemera. This auction is for a lovely example of an early clockwork or wind-up toy. This is a Schuco Automato, either the policeman or the italian soldier, I am not sure. I thought that the policeman had a gold decoration on his hat, and this guy has a black decoration. He is wearing a suit of dark blue felt and has a felt face and what looks like rayon hands. I bought him several years ago from a museum that was selling off part of their collection. His face has some surface dirt on the right side and his right hand is soiled (I have not ever attempted to clean it), but other than that and some scuffing on the shoes he is in excellent condition. He works well when wound clockwise and the levers on his shoes allow him to reverse direction. He has been stored in my display cabinet and has only been removed three times and hardly ever wound. Please let me know if you have any questions about him. I do not know that much, but you can see a similar doll in the Schuco book by Huber on page 55.
