After all, many of these beloved survivors of the toy box have been loved to death. The most desirable bears are the old ones from 1905-1910, made by Margarete Steiff in Germany. This Bear is a light mohair bear; fully jointed; stitched nose, mouth , light blue glass button eyes; 7 inches in height, pointed snout. APPRAISERS STORY : I had the bear appraised buy an antique appraiser in Winchester Indiana on 2-15-2007 . The appraiser reported , “This bear is estimated bears worth to be $2999.00 to $3,450.00.” At the point of examination, and according to traits, he is identified as an original Steiff bear, made in 1903 - 1905. The appraiser referred to him, “as a masterpiece and in VERY GOOD condition, even with the tethered paw.” “ His shiny blue eyes seem to draw people to him, they are remarkable !! In terms of collecting Steiff teddy bears, old bears are expected to show some wear. After all, many of these beloved survivors of the toy box have been loved to death.” He is truly a conversation piece. DESCRIPTION : He has 95 % of his original mohair. No bald areas. No loose arms, legs, eyes or head. No loose stitching. Joints are firmly movable. No damage or stains to fur, although as you can see in the picture his bottom paws are slightly worn. However, true bear collectors tend to appreciate the value and beauty, since they are so loved and highly collectible. He has that incredibly dignified aura ! THE STORY BEHIND THE OWNERSHIP : The original owner of this bear lived in Germany. This Steiff bear was purchased for her when she was about 7 or 10 years old. The owner cherished the bear it being her pride and joy. In 1958 she gave it to her own daughter before she passed away. Her daughter, at that time was 35 years of age. It was kept in a china hutch for display and admiration. She was a family friend, and passed away in 1978. The bear was given me.
